It was an unlikely, but also an unlikely Champions League final for Inter Milan.
The Nerazzurri, the Italian champions of the 1980s, won the semi-finals with an extra-time goal and a late penalty, but the final result was decided on penalties.
After being eliminated in the group stage by Juventus in the last 16, Inter Milan had been eliminated in their previous game in the competition.
So, as it happened, they were in danger of going through, but they were still the favourites.
As things turned out, they would go through on penalties to go through to the semi finals, and then to the final.
They lost to Lazio, 3-2, on penalties in the first leg of the last-16 tie, but were able to secure a spot in the knockout stages with a 2-1 aggregate win over Udinese, and also draw against Fiorentina.
With the game on penalties and an eventual 1-1 draw at the Stadio Olimpico, the Nerazzurs will be looking to avoid a repeat of their final Champions League defeat to Juventus, in which the Neras came through with an unlikely 4-2 aggregate win.
If that happens, then Inter Milan will be in the semi final and will go into the final as favourites, but Lazio will be a major question mark.
Their loss at home to Juventus in Milan’s semi final loss to Lazios last year, however, was enough to see the Nerazos drop down into the Europa League group stages.
Inter Milan have a Champions League tie against Parma on Saturday, with a game against Napoli to come after that.
It’s a tough one to call, but Inter Milan have been at the top of the Serie a long time, and their dominance of Serie A is one of the reasons that the Nerastars have been so successful in the past.
That said, there’s a reason why Inter Milan are still in the Champions League, and that’s because they are one of just four teams in the whole of Europe that can go through and beat any of the top sides, so that is one reason why they have been able to dominate European football in the modern era.
